Continuing Professional Development (CPD) Day on Tuesday 9 January - CHANGE OF VENUE

The venue for the Continuing Professional Development (CPD) teacher training course scheduled for Tuesday 9 January 2018 from 12 noon to 4pm has been changed. The new venue is the Parklands Hotel and Apartments, 6 Hawdon Place (off Antill St), Dickson. A location map showing the Parklands in relation to the Rex Hotel (the original venue) can be found here.

Traffic Plan for The Rex Hotel

The Rex will have prepared a Traffic Plan to manage all car arrivals from 6pm next Tuesday 9 January. This may impact players arriving to check in after 6pm. Players arriving wishing to access the hotel grounds during the Festival (including for drop offs) should observe the Traffic Plan and the check-in kiosk.

Limited disabled parking may be available on the hotel grounds in the Undercroft area but cannot be guaranteed for visitors. Additional disabled spaces are located in the adjacent visitors car park for the serviced apartments on Ipima Street. There are also four disabled spots in the Fenner Hall car park that can be used.

As of Thursday 4 January 2018, the following events are now at capacity and new entries will be placed on a waiting list:

  • South West Pacific Teams
  • National Womens Teams
  • National Seniors Teams
  • National Pianola Plus Non Life Teams
  • National Novice Teams
  • National Super Novice Teams
  • National Rising Stars Teams
  • Chris Diment Pairs

New entries to the three weekend pairs events (TBIB, Penline 500 and the Novice Swiss) are already being placed on a Waiting List.

We can still accept limited entries to the Super Novice Pairs, Rising Stars Pairs and the Penline One Day Swiss Pairs on Wednesday 10 January, the Neura Two Day Swiss Pairs and the Two Men and a Truck Pairs on the Thursday/Friday 18/19 January.

New entries to the Penline 500 and the Novice Swiss Pairs Championship (held on Saturday/Sunday 13/14 January) will now be placed onto a Waiting List. Players contemplating entering should do so because there is still a reasonable chance of drop outs. The TBIB Open Swiss Pairs field has under 10 spaces remaining so enter soon. Existing entries in all three events are requested to pay any outstanding entry fees on or before Thursday 28 December else risk losing their place in the field.

IMPORTANT ANNOUNCEMENT REGARDING ENTRIES TO THE TBIB OPEN SWISS PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIP, PENLINE 500 AND NOVICE SWISS PAIRS CHAMPIONSHIPS, SUMMER FESTIVAL OF BRIDGE, SATURDAY/SUNDAY 13/14 JANUARY

Players are advised that we are still accepting entries to the above three Summer Festival of Bridge events. However, entries received on or after Tuesday 19 December, are being queued in date of receipt order pending resolution of certain operational considerations and the fact that we are getting close to the 140 table limit at the Rex venue. We should be in a position to advise exactly how many of these latest entries we can confirm or place on a waiting list in the next 2-3 days. Players who submitted their entries before Tuesday 19 December are requested to pay their entry fee on or before Friday 22 December to secure their place in the field.

Summer Festival of Bridge - Important Announcement - Field Size Limits:
South West Pacific Teams, Canberra Rex U750/U300 Teams, Neura Two Day Swiss Pairs

Space restrictions mean the daily table limit at the Summer Festival is 140 tables, so maximum table limits are needed for three events over the period Monday 15 - Thursday 18 January:

The South West Pacific Teams will be limited to 122 teams.
The Canberra Rex U750/U300 Teams will be limited to 18 teams.
The Neura Two Day Swiss Pairs will be limited to 18 tables.

Unpaid entry fees: Entries are only confirmed once full payment is received. Once the maximum field size for the events above has been reached, entries with unpaid entry fees after 19 December 2017 will be placed on the Waiting List. If players need assistance making payment they should contact the Tournament Organiser, Roy Nixon on 0423043220.

Further entries: For all these events, any further entries after the limits are reached will be placed on a waiting list based on the date full payment of entry fees is made. Further announcements will be made as required if table numbers for other events approach the 140-table limit.

Following comments from players that there is no continuation event on the second Friday for those not qualifying for the National Open Teams Championships, a new one day 2 sesssion IMP Pairs event is being added to cater for this demand. The Two Men Nearly Time to Pack Up and Go Home Pairs on Friday 19th January is open to players of all experience with Open, Restricted and Novice flights. It will suit players wanting an extra day's bridge following the South West Pacific Teams or anyone else who may have a day to spare.

 • Accommodation at the Venue

It has been brought to the attention of the Summer Festival Tournament Organiser that a number of players have experienced problems when trying to book rooms at the new 2018 Festival venue, the Canberra Rex Hotel. Some players saw that for the January dates of next year’s Festival, the website was saying that all rooms were sold. This was also the response for some who rang the hotel and spoke to reservations staff. This is definitely not the case and there are still plenty of rooms, suites and apartments available for all dates.

The Tournament Organiser has had recent discussions with our Rex event manager, Elly Ivill, and we have agreed to the procedure below for making bookings. Please note this procedure requires either a telephone call or email and bookings cannot be made directly online.
The rate sheet for the Festival guarantees an Early Bird discount of 20% on all rooms/suites (which includes two breakfasts where 2 occupy a room/suite) and apartments for all bookings made on or before 31 October 2017. A King Twin has been reduced to $168 per night and all their excellent suites and apartments are well priced.
