2001 PABF Championships - Singapore

Australia has just won the PABF Youth Championships in a thrilling finish. Australia, who had led the field of nine countries for most of the second round robin, lost 6 -24 to Thailand in the last match. Aussie NPC Peter Smith reports that in the last match Thailand were "gunning for everything and it worked". Australia then had a nervous wait before discovering that China had lost to Chinese Taipei 13-17, making the final scores:

Australia 286
China 280
Thailand 265
Chinese Taipei 263
China Hong kong 263

Congratulations to the Perth foursome Paul Brayshaw, Simon Brayshaw, Greg Dupont and Matt Raisin plus the Adelaide pair of Nic Croft and Luke Matthews, as well as the NPC Peter Smith from Perth. Past form indicates that winning the PABF equates roughly to "contending for a semi-final place in the World Junior Championships". Therefore our fingers are crossed that our team might be medal contenders in Brazil in August.

It is believed to be Australia's first win in the event since 1993. In the meantime , with a couple of matches to go, our Women's Team is 2nd, a distant 33 VPs behind the world-class team from China, with NZ 28 VPs behind Australia in 3rd place. Our Open Team is struggling, running 9th of 12, a recent 19-11 win over Indonesia being a rare highlight.

While the Zone 6 (Pacific Asia Bridge Federation) teams play off for spots in the relevant World Championships this weekend, the Aussies will take part in the PABF Pairs Championship.
