2000 New Zealand Nationals Report

by Mark Abraham

The New Zealand Nationals have come and gone and this year's Australian Junior Team had a more than convincing win over their trans-Tasman counterparts. There were encouraging numbers of young Kiwis there - hopefully their new Interprovincial Championships that preceded the main event can be expanded to include a Junior Interprovincial competition too. The New Zealand Pairs saw Kylie Robb and Tony Nunn qualify for the 28-pair Final along with Mark Abraham and Michael Wilkinson. The former finished around 12th in a field including many of the top Australian and Kiwi players, while the latter were found duking it out with de Ravin/Baker for the wooden spoon placings. Australian Juniors played on 3 teams in the New Zealand Teams that followed. The Australian Junior team followed the Chadwick example from the VCC, lurking midfield before a strong run to the top end. Sadly their run was one round early, and a heavy loss in the final qualifying match saw them finish in 33rd place. Jillian Hay played with her New Zealand Womens' teammates, also missing the cut after 10 rounds (30th), as did Michael Wilkinson and Mark Abraham on the Watts team (35th). Kylie and Tony continued their impressive performance this year by winning the New Zealand Swiss Pairs and look to be in blistering form for Brisbane!
