The VCC kicked off with the Open, Women, Seniors, Restricted & Under 200MP Pairs events. After the first day, Caplan and Thompson have pulled away to a clear 5 points lead in the women’s field, whilst last year’s winners – Mindy Wu and Sandra Coleman are 3rd. Bob Jacobs & David Hollands (father of Peter) have also pulled away in the restricted field.  But this is bridge and anything can happen!  The most surprising result comes from Jeff Waincymer and Leon Sterling who have a combined total of under 3 Masterpoints, but are currently placed 4th in the Restricted Pairs event – go guys!  In the Seniors, Roy Nixon & Niek Van Vucht lead the way, but only 3 points separate 1st & 4th so anything can happen. The open field sees the Sharp brothers in the lead ahead of the well known Prescott/Watts combination, whilst Peter Cork & Janet Reynolds enjoyed a strong first day of bridge to lie well placed in 3rd position.  In the Under 200MP event, Derek Poulton, who is currently promoting a schools bridge program in Northern Victoria, is leading with Nick Walsh.

HAND OF THE DAY

By Jamie Ebery

Board 18 Round 4

This hand presented an interesting problem for players sitting EW. At my table, here’s what happened:

East with a 10 count and a void might quite rightly  - choose to open 1H.  Here’s what happened at our table after the 1H opening:

E            S            W          N

1H         P            2NT1      3

P            P2           6         P

P            X            XX          all pass

1 – Game Force

2 – Director call – 2NT not sure what it is exactly.

The outcome wasn’t that great, with 6 going off 3 for -1000 after the xx. However, I thought that 6 xx could have been a big pickup after partner’s opening.  My partner doesn’t need that much for 6 to make –

xxxx KQJxx x xxx

It brings to mind a hand from a few years ago when I was playing with Leigh Gold, and I held:

AKxxxxxx AQxx – x and the auction went (opps bidding in brackets)

(3)        3         (5)       6

(P)         P            (x)          xx

After the lead of the A, Leigh had a free finesse and he wrapped up 13 tricks for 7xx so my xx here was not without some chances given partner had an opening hand, and I was interested in 7, but I couldn’t really ascertain enough information to determine the correct level. On that occasion Leigh had overcalled 3 with a 4 count!

On this hand, in the more experienced fields, the women’s datum was -50 with scores ranging from 6x for 500 to 6NTx (by NS) for -2300. The Open datum varied from 6xx for 1000 (with some misdefence) to 5x for -1100. The seniors were much more conservative – maybe age helps – and the datums varied from – 800 for 7x to -1100 for 6x.

PIANOLA AT THE VCC

James Ward, founder of Pianola, will be on-site throughout the VCC.

Pianola are sponsoring the Victor Muntz Restricted Swiss Pairs so a special request to all our restricted players to drop by and say hello to James.

Pianola will also be providing a results service direct to your phone or email. If you haven’t signed up for this yet, please see James and provide your email, and you will automatically go into the draw for the Pianola Prize.

Pairs Presentations

Don’t forget that presentations for all the pairs events will be held at the conclusion of play on Friday. We ask all our prize winners to join us for a celebratory drink and some nibbles.

Presentations will commence as soon as practicable, and we expect the event to conclude no later than 7.00 pm which leave loads of time to go out and enjoy dinner at one of Melbourne’s fantastic restaurants.
