Appeal number 1

Posted by anonymous on Sunday, 25 October 2015 at 12:57

This appeal came from board 15 of match 5 of the Dick Cummings Open Pairs.  An Appeals Adviser was consulted.  The advice was to appeal.

2 was a limit raise with 3 card support.

Director's Ruling at the Table

West's 3 bid was made out of tempo.  All players agreed.

The Director ruled that Pass was a logical alternative to 3NT, and that East's action may have been demonstrably suggested by the Unauthorised Information.

The table score of 3NT making 9 tricks, +400, was adjusted to 3 making the likely 10 tricks, +170.

Appellants' Submission

East had always intended to bid game and chose this method as he did not want t0 bid 3NT immediately (to show a balanced 12-14 raise) as he did not want West to get excited with a 19 count, given the 4333 shape.

Further, it would be going against the field to not the bid game with a 12 count in a Matchpoint situation, when nearly all E/W would be in game.

The Committee Decision

The committee consisted of Michael Wilkinson (Chairman), Peter Reynolds & Laurie Kelso.  They dismissed the appeal.
