What should I Bid? - Best enquiry for October 2001

The best October submission came from a regular participant in this service to bridge players, Sartaj Hans.

Hand:

 At unfavourable vulnerability
Bidding: West North EastSouth
 1D4SPassPass
DblePass?

Comments:
We play a weak NT and partnership style is that doubles on both sides are takeout.

And David's Response:
Hi Sartaj,
This is a toughie.
Give partner say ª x, © AQx , ¨ AKJxx, § Jxxx, it looks as though we should bid 5H. If partner's hearts are very strong we can make 6H!
If I remove partner's double to 4NT and then convert 5 of a minor to 5H this should show slam interest.
Not keen on passing the double at this vulnerability.
Please let me know the full hand.

All the best,
David Beauchamp

The last word from Sartaj:
I hate you David. I thought pass was clear-cut with
a) At least one trump trick
b) Void in partner's prime suit
c) Sure source of tricks in the short club suit.
Perhaps not so clear cut, but I thought about it and felt confident that pass was at least always going plus.
4S doubled needs tight defense: lead CK for count and you find six small in an almost entry-less dummy. Partner's card suggests an odd number and you must avoid the urge to play another high club.

You get +1430 or 680 while my +100 evaporated when I missed the defence, failing to appreciate that dummy's KQx in partner's suit was good for two entries.
Yet another hand where the Klinger Rule "Just Bid" works !
But yeah, bidding 4NT and then 5H should be a slam try in hearts.
Regards,
Sartaj
