What should I bid? - Best enquiry for August 2009

The best submission for August came from Maura Rhodes.

 Hand:    Both vulnerable. Playing pairs, I held the West hand:

spades 75
hearts KQ432
diamonds KJ953
clubs K

Bidding: West North East South
   1hearts  Pass  2NT*  Pass
   4diamonds  Pass  4NT  Pass
 5diamonds  Pass  5hearts  Pass
 Pass  Pass  Pass

* Jacoby

Comments:    Partner said I shouldn't have rebid 4diamonds as I wasn't strong enough, but we had been taught that a 4 level rebid after the Jacoby 2NT merely shows 5-5, nothing about strength. What do you recommend, please, Sartaj?

Sartaj's Reply:

Maura,

The 4 level bid does not promise extras. But it does promise two good suits. AQ to five and KQ10 to five would be enough in my partnership.

Your hand however, does not quite make the cut because that singleton club king is not worth much and the two red suits are not that strong. So I'd go for 3clubs, showing shortage.
