Results Summary from Paris 2001 World Championships

World Championships Report #1

Australia's Open and Women's teams each play 17 matches in the Round Robin, with the top 8 teams qualifying for the Quarter Finals. Three matches overnight (our time) on each of Monday to Friday, with two matches on Saturday night. Australia's Seniors Team withdrew. These Reports cover Australian and NZ results plus any other major news.

As a rough guide, in the unofficial world rankings at http://gallery.uunet.be/hermandw/bridge/wbfro01.html the Australian Women rank 11th of the 18 teams and the Antipodean Open teams rank 14th and 15th of 18 (ahead of Egypt, Hong Kong and Guadeloupe).

In the Women's, all the world powers are playing. In the Open, Netherlands (unofficially 6th) and Sweden (unofficially 9th) are missing, but with USA at full strength (unlike Maastricht last year, where Italy defeated Poland in the Grand Final), the field is ultra-strong.
