Day 3 Update

Day three was a mixed day for our teams.

Open Team

The Open Team had a successful day with 2 wins (against Korea and Thailand) and a small loss to Indonesia. In spite of the loss they are sitting first, just ahead of Singapore.  Great effort by the team.

The team celebrated Andy's 32nd birthday last night - it looks like a fantastic spot.

Board 28 in the first match on Day 3 saw an 11 imp pick up for the Open team in their match against Korea.

After a Pass by West, North opened 2D showing a weak major. Liam bid 3NT and everyone passed. South didn't know which major his partner had and tried an unsuccessful heart. Liam knocked out the ace of spades, North shifted to a club and Liam had 9 tricks, to make his game.

The only lead to challenge declarer in notrumps is a club, and that's what Andy led at the other table against a quieter contract of 2NT. After holding up until the second round, declarer tried to make it by playing a spade, but Nabil won and switched to diamonds. That was three down (and four tricks difference to the other room).  Well done.

Mixed Team

It was a disppointing day for the Mixed Team, losing to Singapore and Hong Kong but they finished with a good win against Indonesia.  The team has dropped to 6th place and has a bit of catching up to do. Renee can be seen contemplating what to do over Ben's 3NT bid.

Women's and Seniors Teams

Our Women's team started the day with two losses, but then had a big win against Singapore.  They started their second round robin with a big win against Korea and was in 7th place at the end of Thursday.

In the Senior's event, Australia B lost to Singapore B, China and Indonesia A, but won against Japan to be in 4th place.  It was exciting in the Vugraph to see Peter and Michael bid 7NT on the first board when their opponents only bid 3NT (after a frisky 1S overcall by  Dee!), but sadly their opponents won the match.

Australia A won against Singapore and China Hong-Kong A, and lost against the two Indonesian teams.  They are currently in 8th position.

As always, we wish all of our teams good luck for tomorrow.
