PRESS RELEASE - SENIOR'S TEAM EVENT AT WBF OLYMPIAD

15 December, 1999

The World Bridge Federation has confirmed that there will be a seniors teams event at the Olympiad in Maastricht, 26 August to 9 September, 2000. The ABF has approved sending a seniors team to represent Australia.

The ABF Tournament Committee will formulate an appropriate selection process for the future.

For the 2000 event, as a perhaps less than satisfactory process, the seniors team event at the 2000 Summer Festival of Bridge will be used a part of the selection process. The Management Committee wishes to protect the rights of the seniors team playing in Bermuda at the same time as the Summer Festival.

The seniors team for Maastricht will be determined from a playoff held in Sydney at Easter during the normal playoffs for open teams and womens teams. The playoff will be between the team representing Australia at Bermuda in January 2000 and the team winning the Summer Festival seniors event. If the latter team declines, the place in the playoff will be offered to the losing finalists in the Summer Festival Seniors Teams. There will be no playoff if the Bermuda team does not wish to accept this offer.

The exact details of this playoff will be finalised by the Tournament Committee in the immediate future.

The senior's team playing at the Olympiad will receive a total subsidy of $1,500 per player. The subsidy will not be available to a non-playing captain. The question of subsidies for future senior's events will be reviewed.

The entry fee will be paid by the ABF.
